Trunk Bay in the Virgin Islands
Each week, we’ve been featuring different hotspots of the Virgin Islands. This week we’re taking a closer look at one of the best-loved beaches of St. John. Welcome to Trunk Bay, where the water’s refreshingly cool, the sand is warm, and there’s nothing on the agenda but fun.
Uncovering Trunk Bay, St. John
Rent a boat to take an easy day trip to St. John, and spend time in Trunk Bay. It’s a pristine beach with crystal clear blue water and white powdery sand, with over a quarter of a mile of wide open beach to comb. Trunk Bay is the beach of St. John.
What to Do:
Many people come to St. John to explore the place Trunk Bay is best known for: the Underwater Trail. It’s 225 yards of snorkeling discovery, with informational signs along the way. Discover stunning, full marine life sightings like octopus and colorful fish, as well as coral. Great for beginners, you can learn about coral formations and marine life on placards as you trek along this easy route. You can rent snorkel equipment on-site, or if you boat over, Sonic Charters will provide you with high-quality snorkel equipment for each person in your party.
Things You Should Know:
Facilities: Located on protected park land, this beach is run by the National Park. Showers, changing rooms, and bathrooms are available. Note: These facilities close at 5 pm.
Food & Drink: No food is available, so bring a cooler stocked with your favorite snacks and drinks (no glass!).
Rentals: Bring cash if you wish to rent snorkel equipment or beach chairs.
Fees: Bring cash for a nominal parking fee. The admission fee is not currently being collected, but check pricing before visiting.
What to bring: Be sure to bring an umbrella and wear sunscreen to last a full day in the tropical sun. Use reef safe lotion if you’ll be snorkeling.
Crowd level: You can often escape the crowds at Trunk Bay, and likely only have to share the beach with a few others. But the trick is to arrive early. Your best bet is to charter a boat so you can bypass the ferry and get direct access in order to beat the crowds.
Where to Eat:
While you’re on St. John, enjoy Cruz Bay restaurants, located a 10-minute drive from Trunk Bay:
Ocean Grill: Get a burger, or something more unique like their secret family recipe soup, or lobster ravioli. Steal great views from the bar.
Rhumblines: Hungry? Get Asian fusion fare here. Visitors’ favorite dishes include lobster, their infamous Pad Thai, or Indonesian fries. Arrive at Happy Hour for great drink deals!
