6 Ways to Get Your Thrill On in the Virgin Islands

Thrilling Things to do in The Virgin Islands

If your idea of a great vacation is an action-packed adventure, put the Virgin Islands at the top of your list. In a locale where you can climb mountains, dive shipwrecks, go sky diving, and cross national borders – all in a single trip – the Virgin Islands are the ideal destination for thrill-seekers.

Get the adrenaline pumping with these exciting activities.

  1. Just Add Water

Water sports are a way of life in the Virgin Islands. The Virgin Islands span an area over 1000 square miles of water, which means you can have your pick of a parasail adventure, stand up paddle board, wave runner, and night kayak with ghost stories. Take a boat out to explore ample marine life in Waterlemon Cay, Salt Pond of St. John, or the many shipwrecks off St. Thomas. Swim with sea turtles, and find barracuda, turtles, cuttlefish, eel, starfish, and more.

  1. Go Flyboarding

If you like extreme sports, you’ll love flyboarding. It’s best described as a combination hoverboarding, water skiing, and flying straight up in the air. Put on a helmet and trail behind a jet ski for thrusts that’ll send you flying.

  1. Not Your Grandma’s Commute

Drive the Skyline Drive everywhere you go in St. Thomas. Take in views of both sides of the island from way up high, in between hairpin turns. Be sure you’re enjoying the views as a passenger, not the driver!

  1. Taste Something You’ve Never Heard of Before

How about sampling an intoxicating food like Fungi, the unofficial national dish of the Virgin Islands? Along with its unique name, Fungi is a delicious concoction of boiled cornmeal and okra. You usually eat it alongside boiled fish or saltfish, if you’re looking for a solid Caribbean meal. Oh, and it’s pronounced foon-gee.

  1. Get off the Beaten Path

Outdoor enthusiasts, listen up: St. John is your island. Pick your own hiking excursion to explore miles of tropical rainforest trails. See a 40 ft. waterfall, swim in freshwater pools, and examine 1000-year-old petroglyphs thought to be carved by Taino Indians on St. John’s Reef Bay Trail. Choose the hardcore hiking option if you like a challenge. Note that this trail is not to be approached as a whim or afterthought; come prepared. Bring plenty of water and a light picnic for refreshment when you reach Reef Bay beach.

  1. Swim in a Grotto

Set sail for the BVI on your own private adventure. Charter a luxury boat and live it up, sipping champagne down below in the air conditioning and sampling fruit in the sun on the deck.

Stop at Virgin Gorda’s Baths to see intoxicating sights, and climb and swim among the great boulders. It’s a physically challenging and invigorating experience for the adventuresome at heart.
