Why October is the Best Time to Travel to the Virgin Islands

Travel to the Virgin Islands in October!

October is here, and along with it, Treat Yo Self Day, courtesy of the popular show Parks and Recreation.  Each year, Treat Yo Self Day is celebrated by those who just want a reason to pamper themselves. It’s one day in the year to pause your life and splurge on whatever you need to relax and escape reality. So in honor of this day, buy that plane ticket, find that travel deal (they deals are better in October!), and book that vacation rental on the 13th of this month. Here’s why now is the time to treat yo self to a relaxing island getaway.

Ideal Weather and Travel Perks

October is a great time to travel to the Virgin Islands. This season features milder weather, which really counts when you love spending hours on the beach, but don’t relish the desperate flock to the shade. And with October temps averaging in the mid 70’s to upper 80’s, the season still offers plenty of warmth for all-day water play.

Another perk? October is an off season travel month in the Virgin Islands, so the travel prices can be pretty superb. And since the rates typically rise back up around the December holidays, now is the perfect window to plan a trip to the Islands. Bonus: In addition to lower crowd levels, most kids are in school this month, so if you prefer to surround yourself with adults-only travelers, now is your time.

October Events

From Columbus Day to Halloween, the Virgin Islands celebrates big in the month of October. Here are some of the best events to mark on your calendar:

Columbus Day Regatta Oct 20-21, 2018

Postponed a bit this year is the annual Columbus Day Regatta. Hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club, participants can race a boat and win an award in each category, like Best Junior, Best Female, and Best Male. It’s a great event to watch, and kick back and enjoy some barbecue.

Starlight Masquerade Ball Oct 20th 7 pm-Midnight

Dress up and dance the night away at a gala at the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum. Enjoy performances, cocktails, and a live auction.

Jazz by the Sea Oct 21st 6 pm-8 pm

Bring a blanket and listen to the rhythms of steel drum in Coral World Ocean Park. Food and drinks will be catered at this event, and available for purchase.

Create Your Own Halloween Adventure

Halloween is a special, fun time in the Islands, with plenty of partying. Fun fact? The Islands often feature a Halloween party just for dogs.

Celebrate Halloween in search of the many bats that make the Caribbean their home. Visit the National Parks of St. John to try and score a sighting. (Hint: Try the old plantation mills.) Or, carve out a day to explore a spooky shipwreck. The Virgin Islands are home to many historic shipwrecks, some dating back centuries ago.
